I won a Satellite for the main game on the Saturday and decided to play the Friday night game, aswell to get a feel for the place, try and get an idea of the standard of play etc., It was the usual mix of players, some good, some bad and some atrocious. it was my first time in the Green Isle Hotel and it was a nice place and as usual JP ran a very smooth tournament. There was bounty on Nicky Power (sponsored player for Bruce Poker), which added a little spice to proceedings.
Friday Night Game
My table had only 2 players I knew both to my right. First guy was Damo Kavenagh who for some reason has a very loose agressive image at the table when in actual fact he is nearly the opposite. It is always a pleasure to have him at the table, he really enjoys the game, likes the bit of craic at the table. Beside him was a guy called Gary, who I had only played at a table with once or twice, but he is super super super aggresive, he would make Thomas "The bomber" Nolan look like a tight nitty rock of a player.
The game started with gary raising every 2nd pot and building a big stack. I decided to play tighty mctight and then lost 2.5 k to pocket kings on a 10 high board with air.... sigh. I have found that in tournaments recently I panic when I lose chips early on, so I was determined not to do the same, by the time we got to the break I had playable enough 15K stack. Over the next few hours I have worked my stack up to 80K by picking the right spots and putting people on serious pressure, then one brain fart and my stack is decimated
I played JJ horrendously (is there a good way to play JJ) and lose a 50K pot to pocket kings, then go on monkey tilt and my 8 10 is no good V pocket 9's (rigged I tell ya) out in 30th add at about 3.30 a.m.
Saturday Main Game,
Donal (semibluff) from Boards was on my table for the whole day and put on a masterful display of poker. I sat there like a complete tight nit because I got no cards, none whatsoever over the day. I had Bridie on my left hand side, christ we had a ball of a time chating. Her brother Barney who obviously had shares in Guinness was making sure that the quota was used for the day and was absolutely rubbered by the Dinner Break, so much so that he couldn't remember which table he was at.
I hovered around 9 - 11K for most of the day and then got my double up when My Jacks (at last) held up against AK.
The chips went in the middle preflop and the flop comes out
10 J Q rainbow,
10 J Q rainbow,
I don't even notice the straight as im in pure shock that I have flopped a set.
The dealer politely paired the board on the turn to give me the pot...

Then Mr. Bruce Poker himself arrives at the Table, and announces that there is a bounty on his head, but the dealer politely gave him Aces twice Queens twice and AK 3 times in the next 15 minutes, so there was no chance of anyone knocking him out.
I gave him all my stack when I checked raised all in with yep you guessed it with JcJh on a
Ad 5c 7c 10c board drawing completely dead. He had top set with the Ac
Sunday Freeroll
I went out on the bubble, dealing myself when I slow played
Ad5d on a
Kh5c5h board,
and shipped my remaining stack in on the 2h turn and was insta called by Jh10h.....

Realising that I have now turned into a charity instead of a poker player, I gratiously donated my whole stack to Denis (playable hand) drawing dead on the turn to his flopped straight....

I think the best way to play pocket Jacks is to fold them..... the should have a warning with them "Proceed with Caution"....

Nice meeting you again at the weekend Smurph and yeah, as I said, three ways to play jacks, all of them wrong.
Interesting about Damo's image. A bit mad, since as you say he's solid as a rock. I think I played with Gary in the Blinkers July fest, he played very well (and very aggro) until Dave Masters tilted him.
Them cowboys should played same as you deal with 'cowboys' rouges in real life! With kid-gloves... Only use them as a cheap last resort (i.e. shoving when short-stacked, mini-raise any other time) and stake (shove!!!) them when you KNOW they are doing the work properly for a change! Well, that's my theory anyway! ;-D
Might see ya tonight Smurph...
Hello
Sorry to trouble you but I have an opportunity you MAY be interested in.
I work for the Big Slick in Purley Also I am the Affiliate Manager for Big Slick Online which is our own skin on the IPOKER network. Aside from the Gutshot and obviously now DTD they are probably the two biggest clubs in the UK with around 10000 members between them. We have dealer dealt tourneys every night of the week as well as regular 20K guaranteed monthly tournaments.
Would you be interested in acting as an affiliate for the online site and also possibly sponsorship from the clubs ? I am sure you are aware IPOKER network (the same as Blue Sq,VC etc) is the biggest in Europe and we now guarantee over 12million a month in tourneys.I am VERY confident I can give you both the BEST affiliate deal for you recommending players but also the BEST "loyalty deal" if you play on IPOKER yourself ?
Your blog is frankly excellent and I assume you must be getting decent traffic and of course you must know loads of players which is obviously ideal for me.
If this is of any interest to you then please contact me crm@bspoker.co.uk or mayur_patel10@hotmail.com and if not then apologies for troubling you.
Kind Regards
Mayur Patel
Sorry I didn't get going to Fitz... the 4/5am finish put me off somewhat. Had nothing packed for Amsterdam either!
Hope to catch ya at the Fitz soon - have a lot on in the next few weeks... juggling extra babysitting for poker-time is gonna be tough!
